What are MSCs?

MSCs are cells found in several tissues in the body, including:

- Bone marrow — a source commonly studied in regenerative medicine.

- Adipose tissue — fat tissue that can provide MSC-like cells.

- Umbilical cord tissue — another source investigated for therapeutic applications.

Under suitable laboratory conditions, MSCs can develop into certain cell types, including bone, cartilage and fat cells. They are also studied for their ability to release biological signals that influence inflammation, immune activity and tissue repair.

An important distinction: MSCs are not the same as embryonic stem cells, and they do not automatically turn into whatever tissue needs repairing after administration.
